Satsuki Miyanoshita (宮ノ下 さつき Miyanoshita Satsuki) is the protagonist of the horror-comedy series, Ghost Stories. She is a fifth grade student in Class 3 at Amanogawa Elementary School, who has recently moved with her family to the now-urban town. Upon arriving, she becomes aware of the ghosts that plague the town, and comes to the realization of her mother's involvement of previously sealing them away in the mountains - using her Ghost Journal to the fifth-grader's advantage. Throughout the school year, Satsuki allies herself with fellow classmates Hajime Aoyama and Leo Kakinoki, upper-classmate Momoko Koigakubo, and her younger brother Keiichirou Miyanoshita. Despite being a "ghost hunter" herself, Satsuki has a hard time believing in ghosts, and tries to deny their existence when applicable.
In 2001, Satsuki encounters several spirits, many of which hold grudges against her mother, Kayako Miyanoshita. With this proposition, the young schoolgirl becomes aware of the true danger she's really in, and tries to seal away any ghosts or spirits that try to hurt Satsuki or her friends. While finding peace with her new home, Satsuki becomes close friends with Momoko Koigakubo - the self-proclaimed "Born-Again Christian," and fellow classmates Tomomi Takahashi, Misono Kiyohara, and Aya Etou. However, she holds resentment towards Hajime Aoyama, who continuously ridicules Satsuki throughout the schoolyear, including calling her names and addressing her "panties" through embarrassing remarks.
Appearance
Satsuki has a fair skin and bright green eyes. Her hair is reddish brown and often worn in a braid. Typically, she wears a red jacket with cream-colored sleeves, a pink undershirt, a blue skirt, white socks, and black shoes. Her hair is tied back with a pink bow.
In Episode 5, she starts wearing shorts under her skirt to prevent Hajime from seeing her underwear.
Personality
Satsuki can be quite mature for her age. She cares a lot and is protective of her little brother Keiichirou. In the absence of their mother Kayako, she has helped raise Keiichirou and has become a beloved figure for him. She also does the housework, which she refers to as the "work of a housewife." Because of Keiichirou, she tries to give a strong appearance in order to protect him, such as trying not to be scared when she actually is.
She's shown to be very smart in a few episodes—for example, she figured out how to stop Akane in Episode 18. Satsuki is very strong and determined within, although she can also be a bit moody, mostly because of Hajime and Leo's reckless behavior (although these are usually instigated by Hajime). In ADV dub, she is shown to be more petulant and stubborn.
She is very self-conscious about her appearance, and other characters (mainly Hajime) are shown mocking her looks. Highly aggressive, Satsuki is prone to giving violent threats, such as threatening to put duct tape over the air holes of Amanojaku's carrier. However, she is on good terms with Hajime and Leo. It was even hinted that she may harbor some feelings toward Hajime, and it was confirmed by the anime's creator. Satsuki is also Momoko's best friend, and generally gets along with the students at Amanogawa School.
Story
Satsuki was born in May of 1990. Her mother, Kayako, died when Satsuki was only five years old. When Satsuki was eleven, she moved with her brother Keiichirou and her father Reiichirou from Tokyo to her mother's hometown, and quickly discovered that the old schoolhouse next to her school is haunted. She met some new friends at her new school: Hajime, her next door neighbour; Leo, Hajime's best friend; and Momoko, her best friend. Satsuki soon found out that her mother confronted several evil entities (including Amanojaku, who possesed her cat Kaya) that haunted the town. She began writing all her supernatural experiences in a diary, which she called "The Ghost Journal." Now that the seals have been broken, all the ghosts are free again. It's up to Satsuki and her friends to seal them away.
