Yamime (やみめ Yami-me) is a major character and antagonist featured in the horror-comedy series, Ghost Stories. It is an evil entity and dark spirit who has the ability to manipulate history by erasing people from existence through the process of a dark ritual. Using fright to its advantage, Yamime tricks people into fearing for their lives after pretending to be their friend, and convinces them to conduct a ritual that abolishes them from history itself. It was first encountered by Kayako Miyanoshita, who in turn put the spirit to rest after the disappearance of her classmate, Shinobu Matsuba. Years later, Yamime takes on the form of Shinobu in order to trick schoolgirls Tomomi Takahashi, Misono Kiyohara, Satsuki Miyanoshita, and Aya Etou into conducting a deadly ritual.

Appearance[]

150px-Yamime

Yamime's yellow eyes.

Yamime is a spirit who has the ability to possess other humans and creatures, and take on their forms if their soul had been previously acquired. In 1973, Yamime takes on the form of an unknown classmate of Kayako, based on her journal's depiction of the spirit. In 2001, Yamime takes on the form of Shinobu Matsuba. When shifting into its true form, the spirit is shown to have dark, gray skin with lots of imprints and wrinkles, and has glowing yellow eyes. The spirit also has a third eye, which rests inside the mouth, and glows red.

Personality[]

Yamime is a master manipulator who tricks young students into erasing themselves from the world as a way to steal their souls. The ghost has been mentioned as evil and deceiving, with Amanojaku referring to her as a "bitch." It is also cunning and clever, and likes to trick others, hence manipulation. Yamime can sometimes become easily frightened, especially when it comes to being "tied" in red string and bright lights.

History[]

Past[]

15 Yamime

A drawing of Yamime by Kayako, as depicted in 1973.

Yamime is a deadly "ghost" who appears to have the ability to erase certain pieces of history, including that of individuals. Its sole purpose is to make it's victim fearful for their life in order to manipulate them into conducting a ritual to erase their entire existence.

Yamime was encountered by Satsuki's mother, Kayako Miyanoshita, while attending Amanogawa Elementary School in 1973. Around this point in time, the spirit was able to erase Shinobu Matsuba from existence, one of Kayako's former classmates. Shinobu went missing prior to these events. When Kayako realized the truth about the spirit and what it happened to be capable of, she found a way to banish the spirit - by "bind[ing] her with red string" and bathing "her in sunlight." Upon capturing the ghost and sealing it away, Kayako had the ornament hidden away and wrote about Yamime in the Ghost Journal.

"Tonight the Spirits Will Be Resurrected! Amanojaku"[]

Upon arriving in the town of Amanogawa after moving to their new home, Satsuki becomes aware of her mother's Ghost Journal and eventually learns that local urbanization has unleashed all the spirits that her mother had once banished in the mountains, including Yamime.

"The Devil's Spell - Rite of Darkness"[]

Yamime, referring to herself as "Shinobu Matsuba," takes on the form of a victim from the past, and poses itself as a schoolgirl attending Amanogawa Elementary School. She garners the attention of classmates Tomomi Takahashi, Misono Kiyohara, and Aya Etou, who together gain Yamime's trust. Planning on conducting a ritual that will grant their desires and wishes, they are interrupted by Satsuki Miyanoshita, who also wishes to join their "club." Initially declining, Yamime invites her after Satsuki interrupts the ritual. Once the chanting ends, Yamime reminds them that the three girls are not allowed to tell anyone about it, or else their wishes will not come true. Later that night, the ghost attempts to scare Satsuki and the other girls.

The next day, the girls, with the exception of Aya, gather together to discuss what they had seen the prior night, unaware of Yamime's intentions. When Mr. Sakata calls attendance, he "skips" over Aya's name, to which he reveals that there was never an "Aya" in the class. Frightened, the three girls confront Yamime after class, where it reveals that Aya called it last night to give up on the ritual, and instructed her on how to do so. Yamime makes the same deal with the remaining three girls, and reminds them that they can quit anytime. The three girls all agree that they want to quit, and Yamime instructs them on how to do so.

Yamime, episode 15 timestamp 19-35

Yamime, in her semi-true form, bound with "red string" by Satsuki.

That night, Yamime is able to trick both Misono and Tomomi into conducting the "counter-ritual" and erases their very existence from everyone. When Satsuki goes to conduct the ritual, Amanojaku intervenes and reveals to her that whoever told her to do it "is either a ghost or a bitch." Surprised, Satsuki goes to call Tomomi where her mother reveals that nobody by that name lives at her home. Shortly thereafter, Yamime appears at her house while her father and brother are asleep to attack her. Amanojaku is able to help Satsuki run, while fighting the ghost in order to buy her time to find a way to put it to rest. Yamime makes its way to Satsuki's room, and while initially Satsuki has no idea what was the spirit’s name, ghostly hands appear at her window help Satsuki by identifying her as Yamime. Satsuki consults the Ghost Journal and is told to "bind her with red string and bathe her in sunlight." Satsuki finds she has no red string and instead draws red lines with lipstick on her closet mirror in place of string so when Yamime looks into it, it appears as if she were tied up. To 'bathe her in sunlight', she attempst to use a camera flash on Yamime, but is unable to do so at first. Yamime breaks and grabs onto Satsuki, who is able to use the camera's flash, putting her to spiritual sleep. The next day, Aya, Tomomi, and Misono appear on Satsuki's porch sleeping, where it's revealed that Yamime was not able to retrieve their souls.

"Farewell, Amanojaku... The Arrival of Ohma"[]

Yamime is resurrected by Ouma shortly after seeking his revenge on Satsuki and her family. Upon doing so, Yamime is able to terrorize the children of the school, before eventually falling back into spiritual sleep.

Trivia[]

  • It is likely that Yamime took on the form of Shinobu while Satsuki's mother was still in school, although this has not been confirmed.
  • A popular theory suggests that Momoko was not in the episode "The Devil's Spell - Rite of Darkness" due to Yamime's powers.
    • To cite this theory, this is the only episode in the series that does not feature Momoko, nor is she mentioned by any of the characters.
  • Based on the drawing by Kayako in the Ghost Journal, it is likely that Yamime possessed another student, although their identity remains unknown.
